Children's Choir

At Otterbein, we believe that children need to have the opportunity to be involved in ministry, just like adults. This belief is modeled in all of our children and music ministries. The Friendship Co. is Otterbein's choir for students in 3rd through 6th grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Directs the Friendship Co.?
The choir is directed this year by John Piper.

How did the group get the name Friendship Co.?
The name Friendship Co. was the title of a children's album a number of years ago. The name represents what we want the group to be for our children. It reminds us that all are welcome, all are accepted regardless of ability or position, that everyone will be appreciated and that Jesus welcomes us all as His friends. Basically, it is a very positive and upbeat name.

What does the Friendship Co. do?
The group sings 4-6 times a year in morning worship services. Oftentimes we ask them to sing in all three services, but always the 8:15 and 9:45 services. They also present at least one musical production per year. The productions are fully staged and choreographed musicals that are presented in the ministry center. Some children have lead roles and solos, while others are given supporting roles or participate in the chorus. The directors try to distribute parts to as many children as possible, even dividing parts and creating solos so many can have a significant part.

The possibility also exists to go to nursing homes and sing for residents.

When does Friendship Co. practice?
The group practices each Sunday evening (September - May), in Bear’s Paws from 6 until 7:30 p.m. These rehearsals are lengthened somewhat as production time draws near and some additional rehearsals are added as needed. These extra practices are usually on Saturday mornings or begin a little earlier on Sunday afternoon, but are kept to a minimum.

How do you get involved in Friendship Co.?
Just come! Come to a rehearsal on Sunday evening. It is advised that a parent or guardian come with the student the first evening. The parent can stay the entire rehearsal or, if they feel comfortable, can leave and pick the child up at the end of rehearsal or the conclusion of F.W. Friends. There is no audition. All children in grades 3-6 are welcome. The director will take the child's name, phone number and address and that is all there is to it.

What kind of music does the Friendship Co. sing?
Most of the music we sing would be considered contemporary praise and worship music. The level of difficulty, voice range and text of each song is chosen to be age-appropriate for children in grades 3-6. Most of the music is unison, but depending on the group's ability, two-part work may be attempted.

Friendship Co. is a great way for children in grades 3-6 to get involved in music ministry. They will experience the fun and thrill of being in a group that will learn lots of meaningful and fun music, present a first-class production to a large audience and contribute to the value of our worship services. Come and be a part of this exciting kids’ ministry.
